Was Childs THE THING?

A detail oriented video analysis of THE THING that attempts to answer the film’s final question.

Last month I brought you a hugely detailed, psychologically thorough examination of the impossible layout of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. The guy who made that video, Rob Ager, is back with a new one about The Thing. Ager did a larger investigation of the film, but that’s only available on a DVD he sells at his site; this new video, split in two parts, is a specific look at the question of whether or not Childs is an imitation at the end of the film.

As a genre fan The Thing was always a great film to discuss because of that ending, where we’re left with MacReady and Childs sitting around a campfire, waiting to discover which - if either - of them is The Thing. As I’ve gotten older I’ve become fairly convinced that Childs is an imitation, but this video really goes above and beyond to prove it. I don’t think it’s as great as the one for The Shining, if only because this is a subject any good genre fan has already spent hours thinking about, but I love Ager’s extraordinary commitment to detail.
