I sort of love Expendables 3 rumors for their inability to differentiate themselves from fan casting. For instance, of all the directors on Earth action fans might throw around to direct the film, John Woo has to be pretty high on the list, just under James Cameron and, for the smarter discussions, Paul Verhoeven.
But instead of being silly speculation, it could happen. Woo's name has been in the hat for a while, but now we find that the man himself is open to the idea. Expendables Premier, a website that apparently focuses solely on The Expendables rather than, say, curing cancer, has an exclusive quote from Woo on the subject:
I am a big fan of all those guys and I will do it but I want less studio and producer interference. I want to shoot the movie the way I want. That’s the difference making a movie in China and Hollywood. In China, The Studio and producer allow flexibility to the director. One thing for sure is, I want it to take place in China. I also have a vision of this big fight between Jet Li and Van Damme but then they have killed him off.
This is just a guy talking, rather than any kind of announcement. Nevertheless, stranger things have happened. Expendables 3 isn't just going to direct itself you know. Actually, maybe it will. A completely anarchic ego throw-down caught on film might be exactly what Expendables 3 needs. I guarantee that's one fight Chuck Norris will not survive.
If Woo does take over, we know all the tropes to anticipate, many of which are so far from being cool that we no longer even snicker at them for being lame. The significantly more Asian angle does bode well for Jackie Chan's involvement and maybe even a role for Jet Li that doesn't end with his abandoning the film out of embarrassment two minutes in. On top of that, Stallone will be a couple years older, which will likely sink his character even further into that Chinese Harley Davidson look he has working.
If nothing else, I want Woo to direct Expendables 3 because it would mean a cheesy, nonsensical return of Jean Claude Van Damme's character, and I am 100% for that.
