We all know that Ben Wheatley's Free Fire is headed to this year's Toronto International Film Festival, but we only assumed it'd get released before the end of the year.
Now that it's been announced that A24 has moved the film into 2017, I'm not entirely sure why we assumed that - if I remember correctly, High-Rise came out long after it made its way through the festival circuit - but that's what we do: we recklessly assume things so that we can be disappointed when our dreams don't come true.
Good news is, Wheatley's track record is flawless. You tell me A24's moving Free Fire (a highly-kinetic crime thriller which a) stars Brie Larson, Michael Smiley and Cillian Murphy, and B) revolves almost entirely around a shootout that unfolds in real time), I'm willing to be patient, because I have every reason to believe it'll be well worth the wait.
As of now, there's no firm date on when Free Fire will arrive in 2017, but The Playlist indicates that it'll be sometime in the first quarter. While you're waiting on it to get here, I suggest going back and doing a rewatch of Wheatley's entire filmography. Always a baller move.
Stay tuned for updates on Free Fire as they become available.
