Occasionally Joel and Ethan Coen get off their high horse making their own films and help write scripts for other movies, helping out with films like Bridge of Spies, Unbroken and George Clooney’s upcoming Suburbicon. I don’t know why they do this. Maybe they want to stay sharp. Maybe one has a gambling problem. Maybe they just think it’s fun.
In any case, they are at it again with Dark Web, a script about Ross William Ulbricht, the guy who created “The Silk Road” an online illegal drugstore where you got stuff like crack instead of Advil. He then went around dressing like a clown and bringing laughter to sick children. Just kidding, he was put in prison for life without the possibility for parole.
The project has been in the works for a while. Dennis Lehane worked on the script until he was told the story would not be set in Boston. Now the Coens are going at it. That’s as good a start as most movies can hope for. Hopefully it turns into something worth the Coens’ name.
