Ben Affleck Now Says His Solo BATMAN Movie Is ‘Not A Set Thing’

Don't panic just yet.

Somewhat famously, the announcement that Ben Affleck would be playing Batman in Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice was met with much whinging from a certain segment of the fanboy population. Months later, when the movie finally arrived and it turned out that Ben Affleck was actually one of the better onscreen Batmen we've ever had, the fanboy population quickly changed its tune, and even celebrated upon learning that Affleck would be writing and directing a solo Batman movie.

For a while now, that movie - set to be titled The Batman, and apparently a somewhat-standalone story featuring Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke - has been a life raft for DC fans to cling to while drifting through the perpetually turbulent waters of the DCEU. "Yes, Batman V Superman was a disaster, and yeah, Suicide Squad was a mess," some fans said, "But Wonder Woman looks pretty great, and at least we have The Batman to look forward to."

Well, about that:

"(The Batman is) not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.”

That's Affleck in a new interview with The Guardian, suddenly sounding a lot less enthusiastic about writing and directing his own Batman movie.

There are several ways one could interpret the quote above, the most positive of which is that Affleck is playing a very public game of hardball with the good folks at Warner Bros. (basically, "I could walk on this thing at any time, so please give me the time and resources I need to do it right"). The less-positive way of looking at it would be: Affleck is getting cold feet because he feels he's standing on the bow of a sinking ship.

There's also a third way of interpreting that, and it's probably the smart bet: maybe we just take Affleck at face value - he wants The Batman to be good, and it won't get made until he's happy with the project on a foundational level. We can speculate until we're blue in the face, but for now that's all we have to go on, and it sounds reasonable enough to me.

What do you guys think? You panicking over this or what?
