Except for the In Memoriam slate at the beginning, this first trailer plays exactly as it probably would have a month ago, back when (I still can’t believe I’m writing this) Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher were still with us:
I feel like that’s the appropriate way to present it. After all, they can’t scramble a mournful tone upon the finished film, so why sell one? Context alone will add that extra layer, and I imagine it’ll be super heavy one at that. Just watching this trailer pulls hard at your emotions.
But it also looks fascinating and hilarious and true, almost like another Grey Gardens. I can’t wait to see it. Luckily we don’t have to wait very long. Bright Lights hits HBO in just three short days, making it the first must-see movie of the year.
