The Force Awakens more or less made people happy with its nostalgic return to the Star Wars universe, but as far as mythology goes, it asked just as many questions as it answered, particularly when it came to the movie’s McGuffin, Luke Skywalker. The whole thing ended the second he showed up.
Luckily, we have more Star Wars to go, namely Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII next year. So far, we know very little about it. But this weekend, Johnson let some details about the plot out to USA Today. Not today, but two days ago:
How Rey and Luke relate to each other is the key relationship in Episode VIII, and Johnson says “a large part of the movie” will be spent addressing why Luke’s there and what he’ll do next. Like Luke, Rey has been pulled into a bigger world by connecting with the Force, “but part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson adds. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
Some of this goes without saying, like for instance, the fact that Rey will have to develop her relationship with the force. But the idea Luke and Rey are the film’s key relationship is pretty new. Hopefully she doesn’t spend half the film removed from the other characters, training on Ahch-to Deehch-to. Even if that’s the case, however, we are all likely to get that hot Luke Skywalker action missing from Awakens.
We have less than a year for Episode VIII to hit. In the meantime, I imagine a whole lot of information about the film (like, say, a title) will come out along with a bunch of images and trailers. Get ready.
