Mash Your Face Into Sion Sono’s ANTI PORNO Trailer

The Japanese master takes another unpredictable turn.

When the world seems to be going to tyranny in a teapot, sometimes it seems the only logical thing to do is indulge. Luckily, we’ve got your back: here’s a new trailer for our favourite Japanese director Sion Sono’s latest film, enticingly titled Anti-Porno. It’s mildly NSFW, but since it doesn’t actually show any naughty bits, its NSFW status really depends on your workplace.

Anti-Porno is one of five films commissioned to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno label ("Roman" here meaning "novel"), which was responsible for bringing many of Japan’s famed “pinku” softcore exploitation films to fruition back in the day. Old-school Roman Porno directors had to include four sex scenes an hour, but thanks to modern attention spans, the rate’s been ramped up to one every ten minutes. Kids these days!

Sono, he of Why Don’t You Play In Hell, Suicide Club, Love Exposure, Tokyo Tribe, Love & Peace, and more, is one of the most consistently interesting directors working today - and from the sounds of things, he’s delivering again. The film, telling a story of an artist and her collared assistant, has been said to subversively explore themes of objectification, sadism, and even the issues inherent in the Roman Porno brand.

If the trailer’s any indication, it also sports an almost comically vibrant colour palette, with plenty of weird choreography and fetish content. Fans of toe-sucking, pet play, and cake faceplants will be well pleased. But they’ll probably be made to feel ashamed of themselves. Not that that’s necessarily a deal-breaker.
