We just learned that James Wan has cast Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Aquaman's Black Manta, and now we're back with another piece of underwater casting news: according to THR, Lion star Nicole Kidman is currently in talks to play Aquaman's mother, Atlanna.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Hollywood Reporter's post provides the following character description:
In traditional Aquaman lore, the hero’s mother is Atlanna, who hails from royalty in the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. She escapes her kingdom and falls in love with a lighthouse keeper, giving birth to the boy who will one day grow up to be a bridge between two worlds.
Should Kidman sign on for the gig, she'd be joining Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, along with Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Orm) and Willem Defoe (Dr. Vulko). This thing's shaping up to have one helluva cast, huh?
Y'know, Aquaman's long been the laughingstock of the DC universe (do not @ me, AquaBros, you know damn well that's the truth), but things seems to be sailing along fairly smoothly for the character's first feature film: you've got a director with some honest-to-god vision, you've got a solid cast, you've got a unique setting, you don't have Jared Leto anywhere near the damn thing. They might actually pull this movie off!
We're excited to learn more about Aquaman and will let you know when we do. Stay tuned.
