I haven’t shut up about The Lost City of Z for about four months now, and I’ll probably still be talking about it this time next year. It’s a tremendous film, and its latest trailer does a great job of telling exactly who and what it’s about.
So, without further ado:
Of all the pieces of this gorgeous puzzle, the one that stands out the most in retrospect is the exchange between Charlie Hunnam’s Colonel Percy Fawcett and Robert Pattinson’s Corporal Henry Costin.
“You have come to doubt its existence?”
“No. I only doubt that Z will provide all the answers you seek from it.”
While James Gray’s latest is most certainly about colonial adventure, it is first and foremost about obsession. Fawcett’s fascination with unknown Amazonia is at once backbone and nexus, driving the story along while holding a mirror up to our innate desire to explore, and that’s all I’m going to say about it until you’ve had the chance to see it for yourselves.
The Lost City of Z begins rolling out April 21st (though it'll hit New York and Los Angeles on the 14th), and it’s one of the best things you’ll see this year. Oh, and if you have the opportunity to watch it on 35mm, don’t pass that up.
