Tom Hanks doesn’t do villainy often. Or at all, really. There was The Ladykillers, I guess, but who wants to think back on that one? But this new trailer for The Circle has me wondering if National Treasure Tom Hanks is taking another swing at sinister. If he does, will we buy it? You tell me.
Hanks! Emma Watson! John Boyega! That’s a great cast, and a nicely cut trailer for what seems like the employee version of Pierce Brosnan’s recent DTV effort I.T. (aka Old Man Yells At The Cloud). To be fair, here's the actual synopsis:
The Circle is a gripping modern thriller, set in the not-too-distant future, starring Emma Watson (“Harry Potter”), Tom Hanks (“Sully”) and John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”). When Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech & social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime. As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes begin to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and that of humanity.
The plot seems timely, inasmuch as futuristic allegories about giving up our privacy to corporations will be timely from now until the end of of our lives. You guys down for a creepy Silicon Valley take on the paranoid thriller? As a fan of Alan J. Pakula and John Frankenheimer, my curiosity is piqued. And if your sense of irony is either non-existent or greater than my own, you are encouraged to continue exploring this film at https://www.facebook.com/WeAreTheCircle/
The Circle is written by James Ponsoldt and Dave Eggers (based on Eggers’ novel) and is directed by Ponsoldt. The film opens April 28.
