Here’s the trailer for the upcoming Hulu documentary, Becoming Bond. It tells the story of George Lazenby, an Australian model and wannabe actor who, by his own account, bullshitted his way into taking over the role of James Bond after Sean Connery quit the franchise in 1967.
As you might have guessed, I am super into this doc. It seems to have adopted the bemused tone Lazenby himself has taken on in recounting both his great luck at landing the biggest movie role in world, and his greater hubris in quitting after one film, the amazing and weird On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Writer/director Josh Greenbaum (Hulu's Behind The Mask) utilizes the usual talking head interviews and archival stuff, but the dramatic recreations using recognizable actors (including Josh Lawson, Jeff Garlin, Jake Johnson, Jane Seymour, and Dana Carvey) takes this thing into a slightly strange new place. I’m not sure why the fellow playing Lazenby (Lawson) looks more like my fellow Bond fan Matt Gourley than the actual George Lazenby, but I suppose discovering these creative choices will be part of the fun.
Becoming Bond hits Hulu on May 20th.
