If you’ve been following along with our shenanigans, you know by now that we’re all pretty hyped for Colossal. After a long wait, the monster movie rom-com mashup will finally be making its way to theaters across the nation. In honor of that, Real Ale has created an extremely limited beer (seriously, only 60 barrels) to pair with your viewing experience.
The brewing company has been in Texas Hill Country for over twenty years, and processes their drinks as little as possible. They don’t filter or pasteurize, and they avoid both preservatives and artificial flavors. Their belief that simplicity and originality lend to the complexity of their drinks makes Real Ale the perfect company to create this one of a kind ale for Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal.
Their “Seoul Crusher” ale will be available at Texas locations of the Alamo Drafthouse, as well as a handful of other venues across the state. The farmhouse style ale may sound a touch odd, with its makeup of rice, fresh ground ginger, lemon peel and a touch of Korean chilies, but that oddness comes together to make what John Gross calls a “knock out beer”. You can see all the flavor notes, and more ravings about the ale in Alamo Drafthouse’s press release below!
COLOSSAL, Nacho Vigalondo’s “bizarre and wonderful” (Time Out) monster movie / rom-com mashup starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis hits theaters this April. In celebration of its release, audiences at select Alamo Drafthouse locations can marry their taste buds to the screen with a long, tall pint of flavorful farmhouse ale directly inspired by the film.
Behold “Seoul Crusher,” an ultra-limited batch saison from Texas craft brew stalwarts Real Ale -- available only in the Lone Star State for a very limited time. Brewed with rice, fresh ground ginger, lemon peel and just a hint of Korean red chiles, this farmhouse style ale is a fitting tribute to the film: Big, bold, and entirely unique.
“COLOSSAL is a knock-out film and our friends at Real Ale have crafted an equally knock-out beer,” says Alamo Drafthouse Director National Beer Promotions, John Gross. “Just like the film, ‘Seoul Crusher’ will surprise and delight audiences of all kinds, from casual beer drinkers to hardcore brew heads.”
“Seoul Crusher” is a draft-only offering, available at Alamo Drafthouse locations and just a handful of other venues across Texas while supplies last. With only 60 barrels of this rare beast in existence, it won’t be around along -- and when it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
“‘Seoul Crusher’ is a traditional saison with a Korean twist,” explains Head Brewer, Schmitty Schmitterson. “Brewed with pilsner malt and flaked rice, the beer pours a straw color, with a mouthfeel that is light bodied and crisp in the finish. Colossal helpings of fresh ginger and lemon peel add additional layers of complexity to an already flavor-intense style rife with notes of herbal citrus and a spicy dryness.”
With COLOSSAL, writer/director Nacho Vigalondo (TIMECRIMES, EXTRATERRESTRIAL) returns with an intimate cinematic spectacle that gives viewers what they never knew they needed: Anne Hathaway as a giant, city-stomping monster. Deconstructing the monster movie genre in wildly imaginative ways, this fantastical tale also triumphs as a wholly original and subversive romantic comedy, anchored by an empowering central performance by Hathaway. As Collider calls it, “one of the weirdest, most delightful, and oddly touching films of 2017."
