This morning at Star Wars Celebration, Dave Filoni made something of a shocking announcement: the upcoming fourth season of Star Wars Rebels will be its last.
"It's important for every generation to have their own piece of Star Wars," Filoni said. "And I think kids today got that with Rebels."
The crowd reacted, well, about how you'd expect 3,000 Star Wars Rebels fans to react: a wave of "Nooo's" rolled through the audience and up onto the stage, where Filoni plead a case that ultimately put everyone in the audience back on his side. There is, after all, something to be said for letting a creator end his series when he feels the time is right. And besides, Filoni added, "There's plenty more Star Wars animation in store."
Meanwhile, Filoni also announced that the one and only Warwick Davis would be joining Rebels for its final season, playing Admiral Thrawn's assassin bodyguard, Rukh ("I needed someone sneaky and devious for the character", Filoni said). Davis was brought out onstage to join the rest of the cast, and seemed thrilled to have finally been given something to do on Filoni's series. The man clearly loves working in the Star Wars world.
Stay tuned for more from Star Wars Celebration as the weekend progresses.
