I’ve said it before, but we do not give the new Planet of the Apes series enough credit for being as extraordinary as it has been so far. These are big summer movies, filled with state of the art special effects and great actors, and while they do have action, both so far have been moving dramas with a ton on their mind. The last one was straight-up Shakespearean tragedy.
If you weren’t convinced already, the series’ third entry just got a trailer that asserts that same level of commitment to grown up quality amid the summer movie season:
Jesus Christ, this movie is going to break my heart. From the kid at the beginning, to the wee Steve Zahn ape, to the equally funny and menacing bit where Woody Harrelson accuses Caesar of being too emotional, so much of this already seems perfect and special. The only thing I don’t like is the weird usage of “Search and Destroy”. At least it’s not a slowed down cover, I guess.
War for the Planet of the Apes is coming to make you cry your eyes out (and maybe pump your fists in the air, who knows?) July 14.
