Just last week, Jason Bateman confirmed that he'd be returning for a fifth season of Netflix's Arrested Development, and at the time we assumed that meant a bigger announcement couldn't be far behind. Turns out, this was a safe assumption.
Says The Hollywood Reporter:
"(Netflix) has finally confirmed that it's ordered a fifth season of the cult comedy. Creator Mitchell Hurwitz and the entire series regular cast — including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Portia de Rossi, David Cross and Alia Shawkat — will return for the new episodes, which will premiere in 2018."
Yes, the Bluths are all coming back, and they'll be landing on Netflix sometime in 2018. According to Bateman's earlier Tweet, filming will begin this summer...but will the entire cast be filming together? That's something I feel like we're all very interested to know, particularly in the wake of S4.
So far, no one's confirming that one way or another, but many of the key participants are saying super nice things about returning to the show. Series creator Mitch Hurwitz, for instance:
“In talks with Netflix we all felt that that stories about a narcissistic, erratically behaving family in the building business -- and their desperate abuses of power -- are really underrepresented on TV these days. I am so grateful to them and to 20th TV for making this dream of mine come true in bringing the Bluths, George Sr., Lucille and the kids; Michael, Ivanka, Don Jr., Eric, George-Michael, and who am I forgetting, oh Tiffany. Did I say Tiffany? — back to the glorious stream of life.”
Or Netflix's Ted Sarandos:
"Arrested Development brings us structures, outerwear and choreography like no other comedy in history. Season four marked the first foray by Netflix into original comedy programming and this time, the Bluths will collectively be spending more quality time with their millions of fans around the world.”
On the one hand, we're all excited that the Arrested Development team is getting another at-bat. On the other hand, we're going to be markedly less interested in this renewal if the show doesn't return to its roots, with more than three Bluth family members onscreen at any given time. How about you guys? Excited? Skeptical? We wanna know where you stand on this, so head on down to the comments below and let 'er rip.
Stay tuned for more on Arrested Development S5 as it becomes available.
