In a brand-new image provided by the good folks at Entertainment Weekly, Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander is seen 100% nailing the look of the iconic Lara Croft. Let's take a look.
Let's see...hastily-applied bandages? Check. Very sweaty? Check. Tank top soaked in sweat and possibly some blood? Double-check. Fierce look of determination plastered across her face whilst clinging to a sheer cliffside? Yup, everything's adding up. This iteration of Lara Croft looks so much like the 2013 Square Enix version of the character that I'm frankly stunned. It's like they made the video game adaptation of the movie before making the actual movie.
By the way - from the sound of things, that's 2013 version of the character definitely sounds a lot like the one Vikander will be playing. She tells EW:
“She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning.”
All of this looks and sounds great, but lest we forget - the Video Game Movie Curse is absolutely a real thing (just ask Michael Fassbender). Will Tomb Raider be the first film in a very long time to kick that curse to the curb? We'll find out when the movie arrives on March 18th, 2018.
Stay tuned for more on Tomb Raider as new stuff comes along. Spend the interim arguing in the comments over the best video game adaptation of all time (I'll start: it's definitely Silent Hill and any other answer is flat-out absurd).
