Thanks to the good folks at Entertainment Weekly, we've just been given our first look at Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Ernie Cline. They've gone with a decidedly lo-fi image for this first peek at the film.
Take a look.
So, fans of the book have probably already deciphered what's going on here, but just in case: you're looking at Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), whose story is set many years in the Earth's future. In Wade's time, many people are hooked on a VR-based gaming platform known as The Oasis. When the Willy Wonka-like creator of the Oasis dies and leaves a sprawling mystery behind for the world's gamers to solve, Wade takes it upon himself to get to the bottom of it. Battles, romance, eye-popping spectacle, and many many many pop culture references ensue.
Now for the Real Talk: I read a draft of the Ready Player One script not too long ago and was not what you'd call "bowled over" by it. But with Spielberg at the helm, it feels foolish to bet against this one, right? Depending on how this thing's executed, we could be in for something really special. Time will tell!
Stay tuned for more on Ready Player One in the very near future. Movie opens on March 30th.
