I think Harry Potter is a fine series, one that has earned a rightful place as a cultural cornerstone for millions. I do not feel the same way about Fantastic Beasts, the sequel to which now has a title: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Rolls off the tongue!
While there were light, enjoyable moments in the first Fantastic Beasts film, the project was brought down by its need to shoehorn in Harry Potter prequel nonsense. And of course, that’s what they’re doubling down on for the rest of the series. Young Dumbledore! More Johnny Depp! And for some reason, Eddie Redmayne and his crew!
I know the series has its fans, so I’ll move my grumpy ass out of the way for this:
It’s possible lessons were learned from the first film and this will be a better movie overall. My hopes are low, however. We’ll see when the film comes out next November.
