Here's some unexpected news: according to Variety, Ryan Gosling has signed on to headline Universal's latest version of THE WOLFMAN. He'll be working from a script by ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK scribes Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and while no director has signed on to helm the project yet, it's believed that Cory Finley (who recently received rave reviews for the Hugh Jackman-starring BAD EDUCATION) is currently the frontrunner.
And here's another intriguing thing:
"It’s unknown what the new take on WOLFMAN will look like, though it is believed to be set in present times and in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller NIGHTCRAWLER, with an obvious supernatural twist."
Well. That certainly got our attention. Dan Gilroy's NIGHTCRAWLER is one of our favorite movies of the past decade, and we're very curious to see what angle the new WOLFMAN might be taking to earn that comparison. Will Gosling's character be a seedy media type? A tabloid reporter? We're imagining a scenario where this Wolfman kills, but then comes in to sensationalize his own murders. That could be pretty cool.
Of course, that's just idle speculation. We have no idea what the new WOLFMAN will be about (if you know, do reach out). We do know that we're excited to see Universal continuing along in this manner after Leigh Whannell's excellent THE INVISIBLE MAN, we like the idea of Gosling in this role, and we're not even mad about Finley directing (there's nothing in BAD EDUCATION that would've made us think of him for this, but dude certainly knows how to helm a picture). All in all, we're very intrigued and curious to learn more.
Nothing further to report at this time, but of course we'll keep you informed as further news rolls in. Stay tuned for that.
