Guillermo Del Toro Smash!
Here’s one way to get me interested in a new Hulk TV series - wrangle Guillermo Del Toro to help create it. The genius director will be working with David Eick (half of the team that brought us the new Battlestar Galactica) on the ABC show that will be the first of Marvel’s new TV series. It’ll be Del Toro’s first ever TV series.
The show will be presenting yet another new origin for The Hulk, so I guess it doesn’t take place in the larger Marvel Movieverse. According to Deadline, ‘In it, physicist Bruce Banner, whose alter ego is the green and raging Hulk, will be in his mid-twenties, less reactive and more energized as the world is still his oyster.’
The question, of course, is how you create The Hulk for TV. According to Deadline it’s going to be a mix of methods; there will be some CGI but there will also be animatronics and prosthetics. Del Toro himself is going to design this new Hulk, and I bet you he goes back to the flat-topped, jutting browed Jack Kirby creation.
Del Toro is attached to direct the pilot - schedule permitting. This is the first of three Marvel TV projects simmering, and it won’t be ready until after The Avengers, so sometime in 2012. My sources tell me that Cloak & Dagger is the second show they’re developing, and I’ve heard some fairly differing rumors about the third, so I’ll keep that to myself until I know more.
