Jack Sparrow Was Too Drunk And Too Gay For Disney Execs

It turns out that Disney executives had a problem with Johnny Depp’s performance in the first PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. A zillion teenage girls could have told them otherwise.

I think I might be finally catching up with Disney executives. See, they hated Jack Sparrow, the character that Johnny Depp plays in a seemingly unending series of Pirates of the Caribbean movies, way back when the first one was being made. I’ve only come around to being sick of him now, as the fourth one looms in my future.

But they hated him for different reasons. The execs thought he was too gay. And too drunk.

Talking to Patti Smith for Vanity Fair, Depp said:

“Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, What’s wrong with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay?… And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.”

That’s kind of great.

Depp also named names. “I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’”

And look where Michael Eisner is now. Well, he’s sickeningly rich, but he’s also stuck doing all sorts of goofy web content.
