The Hurt Locker vs Osama Bin Laden
UPDATE: Wouldn’t you know it - the story ain’t so. Variety has retracted the claims.
Kathryn Bigelow is going after Osama bin Laden. In the movies, anyway. Bigelow has two projects percolating, one of which is a big expensive political thriller called Triple Frontier. The other is a cheap, untitled black ops film. Now Variety has said that the black ops film is about the hunt for Osama bin Laden.
I’m guessing this isn’t going to be Jawbreaker, which Oliver Stone was working on and was the true story of how American forces were all but staring down bin Laden when they were given the order to pull back, but it’s possible that it’s set against the same op or fictionalizes an op that followed.
Expect the film to be gritty and realistic and small in scope; the budget being thrown around is 10 million bucks, a pittance in today’s over the top blockbuster world. It’s not clear if Bigelow is doing this film first or Triple Frontier; I imagine it’s all about schedules and timing and financing.
