Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News has been a major supporter of Tron: Legacy (although it didn’t make his top ten for 2010!), and he reported a week or two ago that Disney was on the cusp of green lighting a sequel. The film, he said, needed to just hit a magic number for that to happen. As the film is essentially at the end of its life - the film won’t make 4 million this weekend and will likely drop out of the top 10 next week - it seems unlikely that the magic number will be hit theatrically. But maybe it could be hit on DVD, and it sounds like there’s a teaser trailer for Tron 3 that could end up on the home video edition of the movie.
That’s the latest scoop from Harry; he says that at least three scenes will be included in what is a DVD extra. One will involve Alan talking to the guy who was Ram’s user. You’ll remember Ram as the actuarial program who gets offed in the first film. Another will have Quorra coming to Encom HQ, and a third will involve both Daddy Dillinger, last seen in Tron, and Baby Dillinger, briefly glimpsed in Tron: Legacy.
This stuff was shot before Thanksgiving, which means before the film was released, which means before its mediocre turn at the box office. This isn’t proof that a Tron 3 is in the works, but it is proof that folks at Disney are psyched to get it made.
Perhaps that green light Harry was talking about will be lit when the DVD/Blu specs hit and this teaser’s existence becomes official?
