John Sayles, who has both been nominated for an Oscar and written Alligator (sadly not nominated for an Oscar for writing Alligator), will be writing Girls Like Us, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Sheila Weller. Weller’s book is about the 70s careers of female singer-songwriters Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell and Carole King; the film will be the feature directorial debut of House producer/director Katie Jacobs (the House with the crippled doctor who finds out no one has Lupus, not the better House with William Katt).
I haven’t read the book (and I’m not exactly rushing to throw Tapestry on my iTunes) but the world these women lived is was fascinating. It wasn’t just sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll - the 70s music scene was, if you can believe it, even chummier and more sexist than today. Sayles has been a musically-inclined person - his last film, Honeydripper, is a movie about music, and he directed Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA video - as well as just being a fantastic writer.
It’s the casting that has me curious. Who plays these women? And who gets the bad luck job of playing Bob Dylan?
