The words on that sock aren’t just any words - they’re the opening lines of the epic poem Beowulf, the oldest piece of surviving European literature. The words are the original Old English:
Hwaet! Listen! Thus begins the immortal tale of the hero Beowulf, the bard summoning the attention of his audience. And so begin these socks, which give the text of the first page of the surviving manuscript, a copy dating to around 1000 CE. The writing flows from one sock to the other, so that you may read it uninterrupted.
Sadly you can’t just buy these socks - you have to buy the pattern from here and make it yourself. But I imagine the kind of people who are totally nuts about Beowulf might also be way into knitting. And cats. And solitude.
But seriously, in an internet inundated with merch for junky 80s cartoons and Star Wars, it’s awesome to see stuff that’s paying respect to literary history.
