LA’s Latest Street Art Celeb Is… A Porn Star?
I feel like this says something about the current status of street art: a new street artist who had been making a name for herself with wheat pastes and especially stencils all over Los Angeles has revealed her identity and it turns out she’s a porn star.
The artist in question is DeeKay, and her real identity is Kylie Ireland. You may find this hard to believe, but I actually have no clue who is who in porn, so I don’t know how big of a name Kylie Ireland is in that world (looking at her blog I see she hosts a radio show and seems to be doing behind the scenes stuff on porn films now). But what does it mean that the hottest new street artist in town also takes part in the weekly Porn Star Karaoke at Sardo’s in the Valley?
Apparently Kylie’s husband runs a graffiti blog called Bombed Out LA, and that’s how she got into street art. She started taking photos of abandoned and rundown places and ended up tagging them (in a sentence that could only be written by a porn star, Kylie laboriously explains where her graffiti tag comes from: ‘a play on the urban ‘decay’ I photographed and the ‘K’ from my name’).
A friend of mine recently had the chance to spend some time with Sheperd Fairey while he was at work, and Fairey said that he’s been in street art so long that he’s seen it come and go and come and go a couple of times. Now post Exit Through The Gift Shop, with a porn star as the biggest new name in LA street art, is the form going again - or is it cumming?
