Is Disney getting out of the Joseph Kosinski business? The director of Tron: Legacy had set up his next project with the company, based on an ‘illustrated novel’* that he had conceived called Oblivion. Now Disney has dropped the film, allowing Kosinski to shop it elsewhere.
Here’s what Oblivion is about, according to Variety:
Book is set in a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition and the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.
What does this mean for the Kosinski/Disney relationship? What does this mean for the Tron franchise? I suspected that Disney was going to wait for Tron: Legacy home video sales to make any big decisions, but this feels like they’re telling Kosinski to go elsewhere. Is this a severing of the relationship or a kindness? Are they still considering another Tron film, but just without Kosinski at the helm?
* come on. It’s a comic book.
