Go To The Movies: Weekend Movies Open Thread

FAST FIVE, 13 ASSASSINS, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS and much more this weekend!

I totally forgot to do one of these last week! But I’m sort of on the ball this week, so let’s talk about weekend movies.

The big one is Fast Five. I loved it. Read my review here. I recommend it for inane summer hijinks. Also opening wide is Disney’s Prom, which I will be very disappointed if any of you see. Also disappointing: if any of you see Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs Evil. You have got to be kidding me.

There’s a bunch of smaller movies opening this weekend, many of which are worth your time. There’s Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3D, a documentary shot in a cave where some of the most ancient paintings ever have been found. And it’s Herzog. I haven’t seen this because I’m a schmuck and kept missing screenings, but don’t you fuck up.

Also opening limited (and already on VOD) is Takashi Miike’s epic 13 Assassins. I haven’t reviewed it because I saw it exhausted and totally conked out in the first half, but the second half has some of the most amazing samurai action since Kurosawa. When Miike is on his game he’s unstoppable.

Dylan Dog opens this weekend as well. I have to see this one if only because I’m actually IN it; I play a zombie. I was hoping to get a set visit type piece up before the movie opened but the Fast & Furious films ate up all my time this week. If people are interested I may write something up next week talking about my experience as a zombie.

And then there’s Sympathy for Delicious, Mark Ruffalo’s debut as a director. It’s literally one of the worst movies I have ever seen, and I cannot recommend that any rational person attempt to sit through this odious piece of crap. I love Ruffalo, despise his movie. It’s making me angry just thinking about it, a year after I saw it.

By the way, if you’re in LA: come to the Mondo Superhero weekend at the Cinefamily! Beer! Weird movies! Cool movies! Fun times! Click here for all the info.

What are you seeing? What have you seen? Spoilers are fair game, so beware!
