For the last couple of months I have been working with the good folks at Reel Grit - a weekly badass screening series at Los Angeles’ American Film Institute for AFI students, alums and industry professionals - to set up a movie marathon to celebrate their hundredth screening. Reel Grit scours the world for new and exciting films and filmmakers as well as forgotten or overlooked classics guaranteed to blow the audience’s mind, and they’ve screened movies ranging from Django to Man From Nowhere. They’ve screened 94 films so far.
On Saturday May 21st we’re teaming up with Reel Grit to present six films in a row to count down to their hundredth movie. What will the films be? We can’t tell you - it’s all secret! But they’re all going to be shown on 35mm film, they’re all going to be kick ass genre films, and they’re all going to be introduced by AFI alumni who have gone on to make some great movies of their own.
We have six films, chosen by the six guests, one each from six important filmmaking disciplines, who will talk about how these movies influenced their own lives and work. While I can’t tell you what the films are, I can tell you who the guests are.
Producing - Stuart Cornfeld (Tropic Thunder, The Fly, The Elephant Man)
Directing - Robert Mandel (The X-Files, F/X, The Substitute, School Ties)
Screenwriting - Jacob Forman (All The Boys Love Mandy Lane)
Cinematography - Amy Vincent A.S.C (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan)
