I thought everybody got Monday off, but apparently Warner Bros and Dreamworks thinks you’re taking Friday as well. That must be why they released The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2 today. And since I’m just the studio’s bitch, here’s the Weekend Movie Discussion.
I didn’t hate The Hangover Part II like everybody else did. Yeah, it’s the same movie as The Hangover, but it wasn’t like The Hangover was something brilliant. The problem is that The Hangover was unexpected, while The Hangover Part II is completely expected. You can read my review here.
As for Kung Fu Panda 2 - didn’t see it. This is one of those movies that everybody says is surprisingly good, which means it’s simply not horrible like every other Dreamworks cartoon.
The real winner this weekend is Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life. It’s not a perfect film, but it does contain perfection with itself. The central section of the movie is simply brilliant and beautiful; hopefully you’ll save The Wolf Pack for DVD and enjoy a movie that truly deserves to be seen on the big screen. My review is right here.
And now the Summer Movie Rankings #3! You’ll notice there’s been some shifting of positions. I don’t tend to like lists and the such because I think your opinions on art will change over time; a good movie can sit with you and grow in stature, while a bad one can get worse with age. Last week I thought The Hangover Part II would tie with Thor, but over the last few days I’ve decided that I liked the recycled junk of The Hangover more than the half-assed junk from Marvel. I haven’t listed Super 8 on here because I’m embargoed from doing much beyond talk about it on Twitter. My review will run June 1st and you’ll get to see just where it fits in with the summer movies for me.
