Go To The Movies: Weekend Movie Discussion (Summer Movie Rankings #5)
And it’s another weekend. After lots of last minute hype you’ll finally get to see Super 8 and decide for yourself what you think of it. My original review is here, and I’ll be running a spoiler heavy dissection of the third act of the movie this weekend, after folks have had a chance to see the film.
There’s Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer also opening this weekend, but I can’t imagine that’s on anyone’s radar. This week I did reviews of some movies that are on VOD now and are coming to theaters soon - The Ward, John Carpenter’s return to features (review here) and Ironclad, a blood soaked medieval siege movie featuring a scenery destroying Paul Giamatti (review here).
Also opening this weekend in a limited release is The Trip, the latest from the great Michael Winterbottom and featuring comedy types Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. I reviewed that here.
Previously I’ve been able to put upcoming films in my rankings, but I missed two junket screenings this past week because of travel. Bad Teacher played in LA, and I’ve heard nothing. Green Lantern played and I’ve heard very mixed things. I’m still staying incredibly hopeful, but there may be more Earthbound stuff than we had anticipated.
Finally, you’ll note a new #1 movie in the summer movie ranking. That’s because it’s official: Attack the Block is being released at the end of July. This is great news for folks who have been unable to see an advance screening, but how many of you are left out there? Screen Gems hopes a lot.
