I’m predisposed to like Rise of the Planet of the Apes not because I’m a huge Planet of the Apes fan (that’s actually making me nitpick the shit out of what we’ve seen) but because it seems like the movie is taking the risk of being ridiculous. From what we’ve seen in the trailers (and from what’s in the script) the development and emotional maturation of Caesar the chimp is a HUGE part of the movie. If done right, it’ll be amazing. If done even slightly wrong it’ll be the silliest thing you’ve ever seen. And I appreciate that kind of risk taking.
The latest UK trailer for the film definitely accentuates those elements. Caesar is really played as a character who doesn’t understand his place in human society - he thinks like one of us but we do not treat him as such. You can see the seeds of his revolution in the love that he feels.
Please let this movie be good! I can’t stand another Green Lantern this summer.
