Lars Von Trier To Get Sexy With NYMPHOMANIA

Lars gets porny with his next film.

While promoting his excellent Melancholia (which I saw last week and should be reviewing soon), Lars von Trier said that he wanted to cast leads Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg in a porn film. People thought he was joking, but that’s not the kind of thing Lars jokes about, and now we’ve learned that his next film will, in fact, be kind of porny.

It’s called Nymphomania, and he’s researching it right now. And it’s going to be about “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50.” That should get some attention, huh? I love Lars.

The movie will have two different cuts, one aimed at mainstream theaters and one more graphic. According to Screen Daily even the more graphic version will be primarily dialogue-driven.

“He (Von Trier) is really keen on doing this thing. I think that this will be a very amusing film also, very erotic but very funny also,” von Trier’s producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen commented. “I guess we have something which could generate some press attention. How pornographic it will be, that we have to see in terms of what financing dictates.”

They’ll be getting the funding together in the next year, with shooting eyed for 2012. von Trier will be shooting in English again, which should help raise the money. It’ll be interesting to see where von Trier goes with this; he’s one of the greatest living filmmakers but he’s also a dyed in the wool provocateur. I am sure that Nymphomania will be beautiful and profound and amazing… but also designed to tweak and upset people. I’d have it no other way.
