ROBOPOCALYPSE To Be Spielberg’s Next After LINCOLN

Spielberg to follow Oscar-bait with junky robot movie.

All my whining won’t change anything - Steven Spielberg’s next film after Lincoln, which still shoots this fall as far as I know, will be Robopocalypse, sort of World War Z for robots from the guy who wrote rack-filling junk like How to Survive a Robot Uprising and Where’s My Jetpack. Ugh.

The good news is that Drew Goddard will be writing it, and Drew’s a solid writer. Maybe this can be like the Godfather of robot movies, where a fairly crappy source material is turned into cinematic gold. I doubt that anybody involved is too worried about being faithful to the book.*

The film is going to be so expensive that Dreamworks (now living at Disney) will co-finance with Fox. It’ll shoot next year, with a July 3, 2013 release date. The upside of this: we are guaranteed no more Transformers movies until at least 2014.

* I was complaining about this book on Twitter today, as I’m wont to do, and the best defense a reader could muster was that the book is mediocre but not terrible.
