The New Trailer For Scorsese’s HUGO Is Lovely And Sweet

And filled with homages to classic early cinema.

Hugo

Turns out he was telling the truth! A 'work in progress' version of the film played at the New York Film Festival and everybody saw that the movie is really about the magic of movies, and heavily features George Méliès (played by Ben Kingsley). The poster above (and the shot in the trailer) is an homage to Harold Lloyd's Safety Last, while the out of control train in the trailer is surely a reference to L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat, a 50 second silent short that supposedly freaked out audiences with the image of a train coming straight at them. I assume at some point in the movie Scorsese uses the 3D to homage The Great Train Robbery's classic gun-aimed-at-the-camera shot.

I like this new trailer, and I am incredibly excited to finally see this movie for myself.
