Terence Malick Overdrive

Terence Malick announces TWO MORE MOVIES he'll be making in 2012, complete with titles and casts.

didn't

Both the new movies - these actually have names! - feature Bale. Here's the press release:

FilmNation Entertainment is continuing their relationship with acclaimed director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) and handling international sales and distribution on his next two films. LAWLESS will star Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Ides of March) and boasts a supporting cast that includes Academy Award Winners Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Flowers of War), Cate Blanchett (The Hobbit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) plus Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) and Haley Bennett (Marley & Me, The Haunting of Molly Hartley).

The second film, KNIGHT OF CUPS, will star Christian Bale with a supporting cast including Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas (Immortals, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). Both films are currently in pre-production and will shoot back-to-back in 2012. Sarah Green (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World, Take Shelter, Mud) and Nicolas Gonda (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World) will serve as the producers on both films with FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales during this week’s AFM.

Untitled Terence Malick Project is the Bale/Austin City Limits one, and that's in post right now. It could be released in 2012. Knight of Cups and Lawless - we'll see. I think these are being announced to get funding together at this week's American Film Market. I don't know that they'll actually go into production in 2012, but who knows. Malick seems to be taking career advice from Woody Allen and Clint Eastwood, both of whom seem convinced they won't die if they keep churning out films.

The casts for both these movies are stellar, as one expects from a Malick film. Now to see who ends up on the cutting room floor...

A NOTE: Russ Fischer and I both came up with this headline independently, but he got it out to the world first on Twitter. I love the headline too much to let it go, but I cede firstness to Russ and Slashfilm.

UPDATE: There is some controversy over whether the film Malick shot at ACL was in fact Lawless. Discuss in the comments!
