The Weekend Movie Discussion, Monday Edition 12/19/11

Did you go to the movies this weekend? Talk about what you saw here.

I was running a Friday movie discussion article for a while, where folks could chime in on the weekend's new releases. Last week we had a Badass Digest creative summit, and the decision was made to move that article from Friday to Monday, which gives people more opportunity to have actually seen the weekend releases.

So did you go to the movies this weekend? Box office indicates probably not, although I bet many of you hit IMAX theaters for the Dark Knight Rises prologue attached to Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. If you did that you saw a movie I think is one of the best action films of the year, and you saw it in the single best presentation possible. My review.

Also opening this weekend was Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. While I liked the first film, I found this sequel to be an utter dud, and to waste the legendary villain Moriarty. It was the number one movie of the weekend, but it came in at 20 million less than the first film. Is this Robert Downey Jr fatigue? Is it a reflection of people not really liking Sherlock Holmes all that much in the first place? My review.

Also opening this weekend: Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which David Cross called the worst experience of his career. Young Adult went wide this weekend; I liked the movie quite a bit and hope to have a review up today. I think it's an interesting film because it presents the female side of the arrested development equation; we all know what manchildren are like, but what are womenchildren like?
