One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor, Warns Google Maps

Fellowship of the Ring was released ten years ago this week. Remember when we all thought it was totally a huge risk and a gamble and was a sign of an exciting era of cinema to come? And then we got the Transformers trilogy!

Anyway, I love these films (I recently wrote about why I think the films were a miracle. Read that here). And I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge this anniversary with a little fun look at a Google easter egg - one that took me forever to figure out.

Go to Google Maps and get walking directions from "The Shire" to "Mordor." The result is one of the most parodied lines from the first film. I had a hell of a time getting this to work, as there is a Mordor Retail Clothing near me, and the map kept giving me directions to there. The secret is to enter "The Shire," not just "Shire."
