Our Daily Trailer: THE CASE OF THE STRIPPING WIVES (NSFW)
The Case of the Stripping Wives (1966) by bmoviebabe
Martin Scorsese is heavily involved in film preservation; our earliest cinematic heritage is slowly eroding as celluloid melts away in studio vaults. There's a valuable connection to our past being lost. Take for instance The Case of the Stripping Wives - it seems that no prints of this film exist. All that we have is this trailer*.
There's no telling why this is a 'case.' The stripping wives seem plenty evident in the trailer. The Case of the Stripping Wives falls under the banner of 'nudie cuties,' a type of sexploitation film that flourished in the 50s and 60s. Nudity on film was a rare thing, usually kept to 'nudist documentaries,' but Russ Meyer broke that barrier with The Immoral Mr Teas. The nudie cutie was as light as it sounds - usually silly, often narratively slack films designed to show off naked ladies, many of whom sported body types that would banish them to niche corners of modern pornography.
The Case of the Stripping Wives is a 1966 film; by this point the nudie cutie was getting eclipsed by roughies, ugly and sadistic softcore porn films that were the precursor to the shocking sexploitation to come in the next decade. Lee Frost, one of my favorite out there directors, helped pioneer the form with films like The Defilers. But The Case of the Stripping Wives seems to be much more innocent and frothy, an attitude that sexploitation would return to sporadically.
