It's a heady time for the movie musical. Les Miserables is coming this year, the horrible Rob Marshall is directing an adaptation of Into the Woods, Jersey Boys is getting adapted, and I'd be shocked if we don't hear something solid about a Book of Mormon movie this year. And now it looks like Diablo Cody's adaptation of the Sweet Valley High books could be a musical as well.
This is pretty cool because original movie musicals are fairly rare. Talking to MTV News, Cody revealed that the film will contain original songs by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, the team behind the Tony-winning rock musical Next To Normal. Cody doesn't quite come out and say that the film is a musical - there could just be a handful of original songs that are peppered in the soundtrack or something - but she definitely hints at it. She says it'll have a nice 80s feel, which listening to Next To Normal I'd say Kitt and Yorkey can do.
I don't know a single thing about Sweet Valley High, but I know that I like Cody. And I like musicals. So now I'm looking forward to it like what. "Like what" - that sounds like something that could be in a Sweet Valley High movie, right?
