Will PROMETHEUS Writer Jon Spaihts Fix What Stephen Sommers Did To THE MUMMY?

Universal, please get back to the real version of the character.

I know many people enjoy the sub-Indiana Jones stuff that Stephen Sommers did with the Mummy franchise (me, I only like the terrible third one - and that's because it has Yetis playing football), but as a fan of the original Universal monster I find the series to be excruciating. I'm all about Imhotep and Khalis, played at various times by the likes of Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr.

Now Universal has tapped Jon Spaihts - original writer of Prometheus and whose unproduced scifi script Passengers will probably remain forever a legendary unproduced script - to 'reboot' the series. But which one? Is this another Rick O'Connell schlockfest or will Spaihts be giving us an actual horror movie? Says Spaihts:

"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before."

OK, so I guess it IS a reboot of the shitty new version of The Mummy, not the awesome original one. Oh well.
