Wet Hot American Summer is my perfect comedy, and Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler are my perfect comedic pairing. Suffice it to say that my brain just shorted out in an explosion of pure delight with the news that they'll team up in a romantic comedy parody from Wet Hot creators David Wain and Michael Showalter. I actually punched my fist in the air, John Bender-style, upon reading this news.
The summary sounds as if it's lifted directly from You've Got Mail, among a dozen other films. Rudd's big corporate business threatens to shut down Poehler's "quirky knick-knack store," whatever that is. They hate each other, they love each other, and they take on the following rom-com standards:
the jealous ex-girlfriend, the office jerk, scary in-laws, a boring dentist, a wise dog and beautiful shots of New York City in autumn.
If anyone else were involved in a romantic comedy spoof, I would stay far away, but Rudd, Poehler, Wain and Showalter will not lead us astray, trust. Lionsgate begins shooting in July.
You guys, opening day. Front row seats. Popcorn and a big goofy grin. I feel the way about this movie that others probably feel about The Dark Knight Rises. Especially if it includes any scenes whatsoever of Rudd cleaning.
