Elijah Wood Is Creeptastic In First NSFW MANIAC Teaser Clip

The remake of William Lustig's sleaze classic has a great look and a truly creepy lead.

Last time I wrote about Maniac I forgot that Elijah Wood had played Kevin in Sin City. Large parts of Sin City didn't really stick with me, I guess. But it's important to note that Wood has already proven he can get really scary with that role, and it looks like he's building on it in Maniac.

The first teaser trailer, coming out of Cannes, is online, and I like what I see. The film, directed by Franck Khalfoun, looks fairly faithful to the original. And Elijah brings a whole different energy than the legendary Joe Spinell; where Spinell was a big, creepy slob, there's something very scary in Elijah's small, delicate nature*. The trailer also showcases the film's first person gimmick, which seems like it might be a bit loose - some of the shots in the trailer would indicate that Elijah's eyes are two feet to the right of his hands.

* He's not that delicate. I once saw Nacho Vigalondo tackle him into a pile of broken glass and he was okay.
