Where’s Your God Now: Creationist Text Book Says Loch Ness Monster Disproves Evolution
Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence.
Have you heard of the ‘Loch Ness Monster’ in Scotland? ‘Nessie,’ for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur.
Could a fish have developed into a dinosaur? As astonishing as it may seem, many evolutionists theorize that fish evolved into amphibians and amphibians into reptiles. This gradual change from fish to reptiles has no scientific basis. No transitional fossils have been or ever will be discovered because God created each type of fish, amphibian, and reptile as separate, unique animals. Any similarities that exist among them are due to the fact that one Master Craftsmen fashioned them all.”

Yes, that is an excerpt from a Christian biology text that tries to use the Loch Ness Monster as a proof against evolution. The company who publishes the book, Accelerated Christian Education, fills their science books with absolute lies that cater towards a Creationist (ie, scientifically incorrect) view of the universe. Among the flat out lies in their text books are claims that the sun is shrinking because it is using up its fuel - Creationists like this because it would mean that the sun was much larger billions of years ago, and would have destroyed the Earth. Of course nuclear fusion is how the sun works, and it isn't shrinking.
The ACE books were written in the 70s but remain in circulation today. More troubling than the falsehoods is that many of them are included as knowing lies. The same ACE book that includes the Loch Ness Monster bit has a photo of a 'monster' a Japanese whaling crew pulled from the ocean in 1977. At the time many people thought it might be a dinosaur, but it turned out to be a rotted basking shark. These things happen, right? Except that the picture was proven to be not a dinosaur at the end of the 70s and the ACE biology book has a 1989 date on it.
The textbooks also have stunning claims like these:
“This gradual change from fish to reptiles has no scientific basis.” (Science 1099, p. 30)
“No branch of true science would make these kind of impossible claims without proof. Because evolutionists do not want to believe the only alternative – that the universe was created by God – they declare evolution is a fact and believe its impossible claims without any scientific proof!” (Science 1107, p. 24)
“It is not possible that our planet accidentally evolved into a living blue and green planet! No, the creation of our earthly home required a miracle. That miracle was the design and work of a mighty Creator.” (Social Studies 1098, p. 3)
“The evolutionist does not realise that he also accepts his theories by faith; he cannot prove them by scientific demonstration, and he is dishonest when he claims they are science.” (Social Studies 1097, p. 25)
And, best of all:
“[S]cientific evidence proved the Darwinian theory of evolution was false” (Science 1107, p. 23)
Do people have the rights to their own facts? I guess so. But do they have the right to force children to learn these demonstrably incorrect facts? I believe not.
Young Earth Creationism and Intelligent Design aren't the biggest threats to the world, but I think they're a symptom of the biggest threat to our society - willful ignorance. We see it all around us, a strange disdain for the opinions of experts. There's a whole group of lay people who believe their opinions on global warming are just as valid as the scientific proofs of climatologists. Opinion trumps fact, belief trumps reason. Ignorance trumps society.
