According to The Wrap, Anne Hathaway is set to star as Shrew in The Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare's hilarious tale of how a rascal manly man beats down and brainwashes his feisty, uppity woman into quiet female servitude. Or perhaps Shakespeare was making a satirical point about sexism through exaggeration. No one knows for sure. Amateur guesses on the matter really all boil down to whether or not you think Shakespeare was a genius wit or a simple-minded dumbass.
So long as you have a sense of humor and a capacity for satire, Taming of the Shrew is a blast. Fans of 10 Things I Hate About You should already feel comfortable with the plot, as do the thousands upon thousands of people out there who put on the play in high school.
This new version will be set in mid-20th century Italy, and will be adapted by Abi Morgan, writer of Shame. So you know it's going to be hilarious!
Anne Hathaway is awesome, and I'm sure she'll do a wonderful job as the fiery and quick witted Kate. Now the film just has to get a good Petruchio, not be set in the middle of the 1900s, not be set in Italy, and not be written by Abi Morgan, and it'll probably be really good.
