Coming Soon reports that Gary Oldman has joined the cast of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as the leader of a group of human scientists (as opposed to ape scientists or if we're really lucky reptilian scientists) gearing up to fight Caesar's rising ape civilization.
Oldman's a guy equally suited for both heroics and villainy. It sounds like he's going to be the film's bad guy, but you never know. He could find himself having a change of heart halfway through and provide the film with its human-ape center point, which then tragically gets torn asunder with human-ape misunderstanding, paranoia, and violence. Please let this film be better than the one I just made up in a couple seconds.
Other than the promise that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will have at least one really good human performance, Oldman's involvement does not stand as a mark of quality unless the upcoming RoboCop is destined to be super awesome. I can't help but be a little bummed out he's not playing one of the apes. That would have really been exciting. We know he's up for that sort of extreme acting challenge thanks to Tiptoes.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes starts shooting this spring. We'll likely learn lots more about the cast and story as its production begins.
