A Haunting, Menacing Middle-Eastern Cover Of KARMA POLICE
This cover of Radiohead's Karma Police is very impressive. Singer Rotem Shefy and cellist/arranger Leat Sabbah have taken the song and completely made it Middle-Eastern in vibe and sound. WIth the new arrangement - and when taken with the music video above - the song has taken on a whole new meaning. A big group of Israelis singing 'This is what happens when you mess with us' has connotations that are inspiring or disturbing, depending on which side of the Palestinian question you fall. I find it a little disturbing (but no less beautiful or kick ass of a version), especially since the feeling of that section almost totally subverts the original, dark Radiohead version, which seems to be an anthem for an ineffectual angry man.
Political meaning aside, this cover is sensational, and it does what any good cover song should do - it recontextualizes every note.
