Somewhere along the way, the Fast and Furious series became our most dependable action franchise and also our most progressive. Not only are most of the characters racially diverse and to say the very least bi-curious, but now it appears the franchise will make ass-kicking ladies part of its platform as well.
We probably should have known this all along as the series began with Michelle Rodriguez in tow. With Furious 6's inclusion of Gina Carano it seems a pattern has been set. Today Variety broke news that Ronda Rousey is in talks to join the cast of Fast and Furious 7. I have no idea who Ronda Rousey is. Apparently she won an Olympic medal and has been named both UFC Women's and Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Champion. I suppose those accolades mean she's a real life ass-kicker.
Whether she can act is still a mystery. She's been cast in The Expendables 3, but that's hardly proof. Not that it really matters. Gina Carano was awful in Furious 6, but I still enjoyed her appearance.
Hopefully this becomes a new Fast and Furious thing where each new film incorporates a different female badass to fight Michelle Rodriguez. I also hope this series never ends.
