Ben Affleck will play Batman in the Man of Steel sequel (currently known as Batman vs Superman), going head to head with Henry Cavill. That's a pretty big deal.
Warner Bros loves them some Affleck, and they've wanted him in the Batsuit since the last time they were trying to put together a Justice League movie (ie, last year). It looks like they finally got their wish. Does Affleck starring as Batman in Batman vs Superman mean the studio is still courting him for Justice League? And here's the other big question: what does Affleck's contract look like? How many movies is he locked in for, and does it include Justice League?
Hey, it can't be any worse than Daredevil, right? I am a little worried though - I think Affleck is best when he's amiable. Tough and gruff doesn't look as good on him as friendly. So while he would make a great Adam West-esque Batman, I'm wondering what his Frank Miller-esque Batman will be like. And if he'll use a stupid voice like Christian Bale did.
Director Zack Snyder doesn't talk about dumb voices, but he does address Affleck's basic likability in a statement about the casting:
“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
The film now has a release date. Mark July 17, 2015 in your calendars.
